We live in a time where peoples attention spans are short. Creating lengthy projects is a risk for any type of artist, however, Chris Lockett understood exactly what was needed to create a dope, successful album. His latest release, “Never Die Alone Part 2: Survivors Guilt” hosts 18 tracks collectively produced by IV, Don P, SB Shmack, Marlee B, Progression Music, Rob Lo, Nea D, Matth Beats, Aagee and Chrissy Chris. This East Oakland legend has restored my faith in hip hop music, thanks to his dope bars, storytelling style, his utilization of other dope artists, and the variety in production.

First, creating sequel projects can be difficult. Each project an artist puts out should exhibit growth. With an artist who’s been in the game for a while, plateauing creatively is a possibility. However, this is not the case with Chris Lockett. Compared to its predecessor, “Never Die Alone,” part 2 is just as dope, if not better. Lockett’s storytelling style has a huge influence in the success of this album. He easily paints pictures with his words, using his lyricism and word play to draw his listeners in. This project is a mix of street knowledge and subliminal messages. One particular single, “All My Pain” perfectly sums up the entirety of the album. “I give you all my pain in these bars. I give you all my game in these bars. I get you high like caine with these bars. This is my life I came from these scars. This is my life I came from these scars.” In 18 tracks, Lockett illustrates his pain, losses, gains, and growth. His music is relatable and captivating thanks to the emotion that he easily relays through the mic.

Utilizing a variety of producers to create this album was a good look. Not only do we continue to see the versatility Lockett possesses, but we get so many different beats that make the album easy to listen to all the way through multiple times. Lockett uses old-school hip-hop beats, and beats fused with pop and rock in various tracks. There is a single for everyone on this album and we absolutely love all the vibes it gives. Recorded completely at All Bay Studios, the sound quality is unmatched. The engineering is perfect and the whole album is dope. We look forward to what else Lockett has in the vault. There is no doubt that Chris Lockett will continue to be an Oakland legend in this independent hip hop music industry.

Iamsu! is no doubt one of the more successful and respected hip hop artists from the Bay Area. Always repping his hometown of Richmond, CA, Iamsu has continued to impress his fans with the content he releases. His latest EP, “California” consists of 4 tracks that are nothing short of a dope vibe. Normally, short EP’s have me wanting more, but the way this project was constructed just goes to show that it isn’t about the number of tracks, but the quality of the music.

Iamsu kicks it off with “Stay Humble,” where he instantly goes in on spitting some free game on top of telling his story that made him who he is now. The relevancy of his lyrics and his energy throughout this track will easily have you vibing with it. One of my favorite things about this song is the constant switch ups on the flow and the fact that there really isn’t a clear hook. Iamsu just spits straight game over a dope beat that starts out simple, but has a number of elements added that continuously heightens the emotion of the track with each new addition to the beat.

“PCH” is next, and if you’re from California especially, you know that this is an acronym for “Pacific Coast Highway,” the major highway that hugs the West Coast. This track is more of a chill, driving type song. LA artist, Tyler Langley is featured on this one and her soulful and old school type style ties the whole track together perfectly.

Iamsu gets Lil Jon on the next track, “Yay Area.” This feature makes this song the party song it is! Lil Jon’s non-stop, high energy paired with Iamsu’s smooth vocals and dope rhymes makes this a top single that you have to put on repeat. I dare you not to start dancing when this song is played.

To end the EP, Iamsu reps his city with “510.” This song is one of those that Bay Area residents can easily vibe to as he name drops various locations including street names and food spots. Not everyone who hears this song is going to be able to relate completely, but if you love your city as much as Iamsu does in this song, you’ll understand the reasoning behind this song being on the EP.

Overall, Iamsu has created a dope EP with a song for everyone. Whether you want to hear great lyrics and free game, ride down the highway, or party it up in the club, “California” has something for everyone! Check it out now and run it up for one of the dopest artists from the Bay Area.

“LROC = Love. Respect. Obligation. Currency.” This independent hip hop artist from the Pacific Northwest has never strayed from the acronym that makes up his stage name. Throughout the last few years, he has worked hard to cultivate a solid team he cofounded known as LX3 Entertainment LLC. Under LX3, he has released various projects, with his most recent ones being “For the Summer,” “X I X (Ten 4 Ten)” and his double album, “Luxury x Trap.” All his albums have led to the release of his newest one, “The Art of Playmaking.”

“The Art of Playmaking” is an album compiled of 10 tracks with all but two of them featuring other artists. Collectively produced by Bam Bam, Dash, Rob Nollan, TMAK, Mvllah, Drew_ P Bby and STOC, the beat selection alone is dope and reflects the versatility that LROC is known for as far as being able to change up his style and flow.

With the drop of the first beat, LROC instantly takes charge, making his presence known, and continues that same energy throughout the entirety of the album. As is his style, he talks his shit about trapping, hustling, bitches and making dope music. One of the things that sets LROC apart from other rappers who talk about similar subjects is his smooth style. The combination of his low, raspy voice and his eloquent vocabulary is one of the things that creates the attraction to want to continue to listen as each track plays one after another. LROC is one of the few artists who can draw both male and female fans, respectively. He is gritty enough for men to want to bump his music, while being smooth and suave enough to attract his female audience.

Now, not every single song is going to be a hit. Some songs are going to be better than others, and overall, it is all based on opinion anyway. When collaborating with various artists with assorted styles, it can be especially difficult to blend everyone together without there being a disconnect between verses. This is one thing I was worried about when I first saw the track list, however it was baseless after listening through the project the first time. Knowing what an artist is capable of is a skillset LROC clearly possesses. Utilizing his ingenuity, he perfectly pairs his featured artists with the beats that suits them the most. Every featured artist did an excellent job in bringing LROC’s vision to life.

LROC is the type of artist who elevates those around him, and “The Art of Playmaking” demonstrates his true playmaker abilities. From the production and engineering to the features and sequential order of the songs, this whole album is a must add to the collection of instant classics. There is no doubt I will be listening to this album far into the future. If you are not familiar with LROC and LX3 Entertainment, I suggest you check him out, and follow him, for not only his past music, but to see what he is planning to do next. Be sure to check out LROC and his team on www.lx3online.com.

Artists today tend to rely heavily on dope beats and catchy hooks to draw in their listeners. That is why it was refreshing to hear an EP from an artist where hooks were hardly used, and he still managed to keep my attention throughout the whole project. Bay Area artist, Chase Black, recently dropped a new project titled BlackWorld III: Change. This project follows his 2019 album release, BlackWorld II: Midlife Crisis, which is also full of dope songs. Aside from rapping and songwriting, Chase Black is also a graphic designer who creates his own covers.

BlackWorld III: Change is a 6 track EP produced mostly by Rich tha Gunna, with Kash Beatz, and Ncredable producing “Thoughts” and “Lane Switch III.” Chase brings high energy and dope lyrics to each song. He allows the beat to draw you in before giving you an earful of lyricism. Although a couple of the songs could have been longer, I loved listening to this project. From his lyrics to his beat selection, Chase Black has created a solid EP for anyone to ride to. We look forward to seeing what he does next.

When it comes to hip hop music, the biggest rivalry has always been between the East and West coasts. Now and then, an artist will come along who we call, “bicoastal.” E.L.S. owner of Fam Loyale Music Group, is an artist originally from East Buffalo, New York, but moved to Stockton, California as a teenager. Having experienced both East and West coast hip hop, he is able to blend the two styles to reflect who he is. As I talked with E.L.S. about his artistry he stated, “It’s crazy because my East coast family say I sound more West coast and the West, vice versa. I like that shit though. It’s a job well done then.” I have to agree. This artist is not new to the music scene, having already had some major accomplishments which include collaborations with Messy Marv, R&B singer and Grammy award winner Raphael Saadiq, and has music placements on “To Live and Ride In LA.” E.L.S. released a new EP in February titled “Whisper Louder Than Screams.” This project is 7 tracks of music that is relatable in many ways.

Getting into the EP, that aggressive East coast sound is easily recognizable with the first track, “I’m Focused Fam.” Just as the title suggests, this song is all about being focused on the grind, making money and being hungry for success. The second track “Ride Fuh Me” has a West coast beat as E.L.S. blends that East coast flow into the track. The first verse of the song has him shouting out who this track is for. If you don’t find yourself moving to this beat and getting hyped up by his lyrics, you might as well shut the music off now until you can appreciate the music you’re listening to, because it just continues to get better. “No Chill” is where E.L.S. introduces his ability to tell a story through rap. Throughout this track he talks about people trying to put drama on him and how how he’s not with that. “Believe me, I try to have a chill button. I try to have a chill button. But they won’t let me have a chill button. They won’t let me have a chill button. Believe me! I try to have a chill button. I try to have a chill button. But they won’t let me have a chill button. They won’t let me have a chill button.” The use of repetition and clichés heightens the importance of his lyrics in each verse.

As we continue to listen to this EP, we’re introduced to the one and only feature on the project. Big Preme is another big Bay Area artist who has a drive to be the best at everything he does. In track 4, “HustleVille,” E.L.S. and Big Preme rap well together, as they talk to each other throughout the track. Talking about the hustle and grind, the hook is smooth and catchy and both artists feed off each others energies. This is probably one of my favorites from the project. Going into track 5, “Ya’ll See It” is all about E.L.S. talking his shit, letting us know how much swagger he has. This is the first song in the EP where he really hypes himself up, talking about how he’s loved to be hated. “War Cry (Warrior)” is one of those songs that is a perfect work out song. It will have you feeling motivated to do better and be better. From the beat to the lyrics to the energy he brings, E.L.S. may be talking about some personal things, but it’s relatable, especially as the hook hits, where he compares himself to a warrior. Finally, we get to the last song, “Did It Again,” where he talks his shit again, which is easily summed up in these lines: “I believe I can freeze heat. And I can reach and touch the sun in a single leap. I can wave my hands and bring peace to the streets. I can move mountains. Oh how I love being me! I believe I can freeze heat. And I can reach and touch the sun in a single leap. I can wave my hands and bring peace to the streets. And if you ask me, I can do anything I put my mind to.”

To sum up “Whisper Louder Than Screams” into two words: Street Poetry. There is a certain idyllic grace that E.L.S. brings to each track. The songs on this album are not overly “hyphy” as most West coast music is, but also not too aggressive sounding as the East coast style. He really does blend both styles of hip hop very well. His lyrics are full of relevancy and game that anyone can use in their own lives. Each track has a hook that is catchy, due to the repetition he uses. This style is actually very effective in keeping the attention of a listener while forcing them to really listen to the lyrics in each verse. It seems nowadays that hooks are used as the main part of the song, with verses being fillers, and the fact that E.L.S. seems to only use the hook as a separator of his verses, is refreshingly old school. According to E.L.S., every song on this project was old to him; stored away in his archives of unreleased material. I know that artists tend to stow away a number of songs to come back to later, and I’m glad that E.L.S. did! When you can record songs and release them years later and they still hold relevancy, you know you’re doing something right! I appreciated the chance to talk with this artist about his music and write this review. I look forward to hearing more from him in the near future.

Coming through with valuable features and production there are plenty of hits on this 16 song line up. Some real heavy beats for oakland streets and beyond, there is literally game laced through every corner. “People speak on love like its Chinese, that talk is foreign” says Ansar on Track #6 “Outta Pocket” featuring Raibeez (@raibeez).

Track #8 “In This Life” delivered a modern trap sound that will definitely be a crowd favorite to any one running a sound system, again giving a shout out to quality production. 4rax (@4rax_of_themekanix) and all the other collaborators carry flame through the tape, AnsarBlackPearl does a great job recruiting his people and translating his sound.
