Kendrick Lamar Announces March 23 Album Release Date

Kendrick Lamar just revealed that his highly anticipated sophomore album is dropping within the month.

On Friday afternoon (Mar. 6), the rapper posted an iTunes link to Twitter that is a placeholder link for a new album, with a $14.99 pre-order button. As of now, the link leads to a “Digital Booklet – TBD” item, with no artwork and “[Untitled]” where the album title would be. However, the pre-order indicates that Lamar’s new release is expected on March 23.

UPDATE: The iTunes link now includes a 16-song track list, with “The Blacker The Berry” the only track with a revealed title. The single “i” does not appear to be on the album.

A rep for Lamar confirms that the March 23 date is indeed official.

Lamar’s follow-up to 2012’s good kid, m.A.A.d city has been expected for the first half of 2015, although a release date has never been announced. The West Coast titan dropped the single “i” last year, and won the best rap performance and best rap song Grammys for the track last month. “The Blacker The Berry,” released days after the Grammys, has also preceded the new album.

Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, which was nominated for the album of the year Grammy in 2014, has sold 1.38 million copies to date, according to Nielsen Music. Earlier this week, Lamar was announced as one of the headliners for the 2015 Sweetlife Festival, which will take place May 30-31 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md.
